We had the pleasure of meeting Jim Shore recently and everything you’ve read or heard about this charming artist is absolutely true!

A self-taught artist, Jim Shore worked as an engineer before turning his full attention to art. He has painted in a variety of media including watercolor and egg tempura, a technique made popular by artists Andrew Wyeth and Bob Timberlake. Jim Shore has also perfected his technique in silver and gold-smithing, wood carving, stained glass, furniture making and sculpting in stone.

With this diverse background and experience, Shore has become an accomplished artist. He has created portraits for the governments of both North and South Carolina. As the creator of the popular pencil Santa line, Shore changed the look of Santa in the early 1990s. He is an active member and president of the Yorkville Artist Guild.

His artwork can currently be found in the collections of corporations and universities across the United States.

  • More About the Artist: Jim Shore grew up in rural South Carolina, the son of artistic parents who instilled a love of the traditional values expressed in American folk art. His grandmother was a master quilter who taught him an appreciation for the patience and skill required to bring intricate designs to life. Jim drew inspiration from these roots. “There’s an innocence and purity to the quilts, appliques and folk scenery found in the early days of our country. These were masterpieces that were designed not for commission, but because the artists were driven to create. I collect quilts dating back over 150 years and when I look at the level of skill and creativity I am continually amazed. This is high art from humble beginnings.” To Jim Shore, a Santa Claus isn’t just a Santa Claus, it’s a canvas to be painted. Taking designs from quilting, rosemalling, applique and flat perspective folk art, he creates an intricate and colorful work of art that reflects our shared cultural heritage yet has his unmistakable Jim Shore signature style and heart.
  • We’ve had the immense pleasure of meeting Jim Shore several times at the Enesco showroom, and without a doubt, Jim Shore is a treasure to American Folk-Art and to all who enjoy his incredibly detailed art. He is a true gentleman and a humble artist who simply loves what he is doing and it shows in the design of every piece he authorizes to be produced with his name on it! Chatting with Jim Shore gave us even more of an appreciation for the high quality of his designs because when he speaks about his art, you understand his heart truly goes into each design. The beauty of Jim Shore Heartwood Creek collection is that it fits into almost any home decor style and its incredible detailing is appreciated by all who receive a Jim Shore figurine, whether it be animals, angels, santas or other theme designs.
  • Jim Shore HEART-CRAFTED Heartwood Creek:When immigrants first arrived in this country they brought with them a rich and varied history of Old World decorative techniques, creating beautiful and functional items for their new home. American folk art has its roots in this history and combination of forms. From German quilts to Scandinavian decorative paintings to English appliqué, the New World became a new stage for centuries of artistic tradition. And as these traditions developed, the energy, the opportunity and the character of this new land put its own stamp these European traditions. The unmistakable “Heartcrafted” style of Jim Shore draws its inspiration from these traditions, creating authentic new interpretations of our shared cultural heritage.
